What is the role?

We are looking for someone to join our core platform team as a Senior Software Developer. You would be joining a collaborative and supportive team and work across a range of technologies.

Our core platform stack is made up of Go, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB. The tooling layer which sits on top of this consists of React, GraphQL and TestCafe. All our tech is deployed onto Google Cloud Platform, with an increasingly large percentage of this being automated through Terraform.

We care deeply about quality and place a heavy emphasis on automated testing and peer reviews.

Although exactly what you were working on would evolve over time the role would initially have two primary focuses:

  • Building data processing pipelines to aid with the preparation and presentation of our analytical data.

  • Increasing the percentage of our infrastructure defined in code.

2. Skills test. We will ask you to show evidence of your skills in a relevant area.

3. If these go well we will invite you to work with us for a day so that we can see how you fit in, and you can get a real feel for what your job would be like. You will be paid for your time. If you are already in full or part-time employment/education or are not currently in Birmingham we’ll work with you to find the best way to manage this. We call this “date before you marry”.

Requirements

Who are we looking for?

Essential

  • (Vanilla) JavaScript.

  • CSS.

  • HTML.

  • A high-level language in the C family (e.g. C, C++, C#, Java, Go, etc.).

  • SQL (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLServer, Oracle, etc.).

  • Experience devising and deploying solutions into services provided by a public cloud provider (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.).

  • Experience creating and maintaining suites of automated tests.

  • A proven track record of delivering projects to a high standard and on time.

  • A proven ability to work within an agile team.

Desirable

  • Node.js.

  • Go.

  • React.

  • Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, Ansible, etc.).

  • Kubernetes.

  • Experience working with data processing pipelines (i.e. taking a raw stream of data and preparing it for analysis).

  • Continuous Integration (e.g. CircleCI, TravisCI, Jenkins, etc.).

  • Continuous Deployment (e.g. Spinnaker, GitHub actions, etc.).
